Edgars Inn

There are only a few veggie options on their menu – but they are a pub, so I guess that is to be expected. We had both decided on breakfast for lunch as the menu didn’t indicate a time that breakfast finished. When we went to order we were told no more breakfast, so I had the nachos and Martin had the foccacia. The nachos were ok, I wasn’t too keen on the salsa and there seemed to be way too much guacamole and sour cream. Martin said the foccacia was ok, although not actually on foccacia bread – this has seemed to be a bit of a theme for us lately! We also had the veggie spring rolls which were ok, and in the past I have had the beer battered chips – which are yummy. In fact, I think I would have been happier with a plate of those instead of the nachos! Will have to remember that for next time!!

Speight’s Landing Bar – Franz Josef, New Zealand

We were really not sure what we could eat here. This was one of three places recommended by the hotel, but I was pretty convinced that we would end up with pizza! This place ended up being pretty good – it really is a bar that does good food! There were a number of veggie things to choose from on the menu and we went for the crumbed camembert with plum sauce to share and then I had the veggie nachos and Martin went with the warm veggie salad. The crumbed camembert was divine – as it should have been – it was deep fried! But the plum sauce was a fantastic touch and complemented it very well. The veggie nachos were huge and pretty good, although the corn chips underneath got pretty soggy! Martin said his warm veggie salad was pretty good, but I thought it tasted a little bland – but it wasn’t something I was in the mood for. We also had a couple of Speight’s beers – how could we not when we were in a Speight’s bar that far away from the actual brewery in Dunedin! All in all a good meal, and if I would definitely recommend it!

Debacle

Another lunch experience with a group of people for someone’s farewell lunch. I know I have said that I wouldn’t bother with pizza from here again, I had hoped that there would be a veggie option, or at least an adaptable option on the specials board. Sadly there was not. I quite like some of the tapas-type meals – they are really quite yummy, but expensive and too large for just one person. The person organising the function had mentioned that it was 2 for the price of 1 pizza on Tuesdays, so we decided that would probably be the best option. 2 for 1 actually makes the pizzas here a reasonable price. A friend and I decided on 2 small pizzas – I went for the potato and he went for the chevre – with artichokes and goats cheese. We swapped a piece each and both pizzas were pretty good. I do think that the potato one would get a little boring if you ordered anything more than a small one though… I might go back and eat in, but I was pretty disappointed with the lack of veggie options or adaptable options on the specials board. And it is all quite expensive – especially for bar food…

Debacle

I have reviewed this place before, commenting on the food if you eat there – which is pretty good. This time we had takeaway pizza (which we have had before). A few things bugged me – firstly it turns out we had an old menu – not usually a problem, except that when we tried to order the standard vegetarian pizza we were told they didn’t have that on the menu, so we ended up with half potato and half gourmet veggie (I have no idea what it was actually called because they didn’t have a new takeaway menu!) – I really didn’t want a ‘gourmet’ veggie pizza. The second thing that bugged me was that it took a long time – although, it was a Saturday night and they were probably busy, we just wanted food quickly. And thirdly the price freaked me out! Over $30 for one large pizza and a garlic bread (which wasn’t really a garlic bread, more of a very small garlic pizza – again not what I wanted). So, those things, combined with the fact that the pizza was fairly average made this a very average experience. I seriously doubt that I would bother with pizza from here again…

Edgars Inn

This is a great little pub at Ainslie shops. It has a really nice location and it is a nice place for a beer on a sunny afternoon – which is what we had with our lunch during this visit. I have been here a few times for drinks but have only eaten a meal here twice, and both times have had the same thing – vegetarian nachos (for 2!). There isn’t a huge veggie range – which I guess is to be expected from a pub, but it is a little disappointing considering the location! The food is pretty good though, and my meat eating companion was impressed by his steak sandwich! So, if you are in the mood for a beer in the sun and some nachos or a focaccia, then this is your place!

Debacle

This was a lunch experience, although, we have had take away pizzas from here a few times before. There are a couple of veggie pizzas and the vegetarian nachos on the menu, but there was also a veggie pasta on the specials board. None of that really appealed this time, what I wanted was the other special pasta that had chorizo in it, but without the chorizo – which they were happy to do! They even asked if I wanted something else vegetarian in it instead! And it was great! Penne with roasted capsicum, mushrooms and spinach in a creamy chilli sauce.
